The federal Liberal opposition has committed $150 million, if it is elected to government next year, to enable the Greater South East Irrigation Scheme to go ahead.
CRPA president James Bresnehan said the association and its members wholeheartedly welcome this announcement.
“We thank those involved who have taken the time to meet with us and listened to our calls to back this important project, which will see increased investment, jobs and agricultural output in our region,” Mr Bresnehan said.
“We are now calling on the federal Labor government to make a stronger commitment by urgently responding to the Tasmanian Government’s formal request for the funding which would enable the scheme to get underway now, rather than waiting until after the election.”
“The current legacy irrigation schemes we have in place are not fit for purpose, so continuing on as we are currently is just not an option and time is critical – we can’t wait around while this project loses important momentum.”
