Former Nuffield Scholarship winner and CRPA member Jake Newnham was recently awarded 2023 Tasmanian Young Fruit Grower of the Year, at the Fruit Growers Tasmania annual conference.
A second-generation apricot and cherry grower at Lowdina Orchard in Campania, Jake’s 2018 research scholarship focussed on improving the cold chain for fruit to extend shelf life.
Quoted in Tasmanian Country, Jake said winning the Young Fruit Grower of the Year award was a surprise.
“I know a lot of people on the honour board who are big influences for me, and characters in the fruit growing industry, so it’s an honour to be awarded,” Jake said.
“As an industry we need to encourage more young people and change the way we promote agriculture.”
CRPA congratulates Jake on this prestigious award.
