Following on from the excellent presentation at our last meeting by Dr Tomas Remenyi on climate change, current climate models and the climate change effects on southern Tasmania, the CRPA Committee has been working on extending his presentation into a workshop.

Over half a day, this workshop will focus on data more closely related to the Coal River valley. This is a great opportunity to tap into the latest climate information and how we can use it to adjust to predictable changes likely to affect us.

Date: Monday 18 September 2023

Time: 9:00am to 1:00pm (refreshments and lunch provided)

Location: Wattlebanks Cafe, 27 Bridge St, Richmond, Tas

With the generous support of the Tas Farm Innovation Hub, we are able to offer attendance at this workshop for free, to both CRPA members and non-members.

If you’re not already a member, join CRPA for access to more workshops like this.

About the workshop

Dr Tom Remenyi is a climate scientist with more than 10 years’ experience in translating and communicating climate models and information to assist with planning for and adapting to change.

The workshop will include both information from Tom and knowledge sharing among participants, covering the following:

  • Weather forecasting (1-14 days): how and when should we trust it.
  • Seasonal forecasting (1-12 months): can we trust it, and when is it useful.
  • Climatology (typical conditions each year): how is this used already, and how could it be used better.
  • Climate change (future decades):
  • a.      How much should we trust the science.
  • b.      How is the climate likely to change in the Coal River Valley
  • c.      What types of decisions should this influence on the farm.
  • How operations have changed across the region over the last 20 years
  • the biggest risks for farmers
  • the emerging opportunities.
